The court has forbidden Microsoft to sell Word in the USA
Texas judge Leonard Devis has forbidden Microsoft to sell or import into the United States any products on the basis of Microsoft Word if they include functions on opening of files.XML.DOCX and.DOCM, containing created by user XML, transfers «Lenta.ru».
As it became known to journalists, the court has satisfied with the decision the company claim i4i, received the patent for a method of reading of XML-files in 1998. Besides, the judge has obliged Microsoft to pay to the company i4i more than 290 million dollars as compensation of the damage put by infringement.
The judge has given Microsoft 60 days on order performance, writes PC World. The edition believes, that for this time Microsoft can remove a part of the functions mentioning the patent. Though reading and record of XML-files are an integral part of last version of software package Microsoft Office, the patent mentions possibility to create own XML-documents and to change their architecture. If Microsoft it is necessary to cut down functionality Microsoft Office users will be deprived by possibilities to create own templates.
The company i4i has accused Microsoft of conscious infringement of the patent legislation in March, 2007. In 2009, before imposing of an interdiction for sale Word, the court has already obliged Microsoft to pay i4i 200 million dollars.
It is necessary to notice, that on August, 7th Microsoft has received the patent for XML-dialect Microsoft Office, having promised developers not to pursue them for use of the described format in the programs. The patent covers not only existing versions Office for desktop computers, but also the web appendices which have not left yet.
