Laser diodes will do of polymers
The laser diodes widely used in CD and DVD-players, it will be shortly possible to make from polymeric materials.
The last years there were many semi-conductor devices on the basis of organic materials, including polymers. Among such systems - light-emitting diodes for displays and illumination, field transistors for various electronic schemes, photo diodes for converters of a solar energy and various photodetectors. However, despite efforts of many laboratories, the laser diode from polymeric materials and it was not possible to creat, writes CNews.
One of the basic obstacles in this work was absence of a material which could conduct the big current and simultaneously generate powerful enough radiation. It at last managed to be made the scientist from Imperial College in London together with the Japanese researchers from Sumitomo Chemical Company. Results are described in journal Nature Material.
The Japanese chemists have created a new material on the basis of small updating of already known polymer weed (9,9-dioktilfluorena) (PFO) which the last years intensively studied as a perspective material for electronics and optoelectronics. Polymers on a basis fluorena are the semiconductors of p-type having thus also a strongly pronounced photoluminescence and an electroluminescence. It was possible to receive and laser radiation in polifluorene, however the radiation exit was insignificant, and it could be received only by means of an optical rating.
In a new polymeric material almost in 200 times mobility of charges, thus ability to radiate light in a dark blue range of a spectrum has grown has not decreased. Earlier it was possible to improve only one of these two indicators, other thus inevitably worsened. Professor Donald Bredli (Donal Bradley), the leading author of the article, considers this result as the most important in work. Its co-author Dr. Stavrinou (Stavrinou) has declared, that prospects of creation of polymeric laser diodes which will radiate in very wide range of a spectrum - from a near ultraviolet to a near Ik-range open. This property present laser diodes on traditional semi-conductor materials have no. It is important to notice also, that the "know-how" will not require the big expenses, informs PhysOrg.
