HP Labs start three harmless projects

For working out of business models and technologies which will promote reduction of influence on environment, HP Labs start the project first in branch on reduction of emissions of carbon by data-processing centres (TSOD) on 75 %, unprecedented research on replacement of copper posting in servers laser beams, working out of toolkit for measurement and the control of quantity of the energy expended on production of this or that production.

Working out of technologies of maintenance of the stable environment is one of five basic directins of researches HP Labs after Laboratories reoriented the activity on the decision most acute problems which will rise before technological customers of the company the next ten years.

Optimum for environment TSODyi

Laboratories HP have presented project Sustainable Data Center (Harmless TSOD) which to allow to reduce a total cost date-centre at the expense of reduction of emissions of carbon to 75 %. For example, average TSOD in a year consumes to five megawatt of the electric power; the same quantity of energy would suffice on maintenance with an electricity over 4300 houses in the USA within the whole year. Started NR the research project will allow the companies to reduce considerably quantity of the electric power consumed TSODami.

Under the guidance of CHandrakanta Patelya (Chandrakant Patel), the scientific employee and director Sustainable IT Ecosystem Lab (Laboratories on creation of the harmless IT Environment), scientists will investigate, how energy at all stages of life cycle TSODa, since production, construction, use and finishing salvaging of all its components is used and supervised. The structure of a command of researchers will include scientists in the field of the theory of computers and systems and materials technology; physicists, mechanical engineers and electrical engineers. The command will use the received information for working out of technologies for TSOD which will allow to reduce considerably consumption of resources at preservation of a necessary performance level, reliability and non-failure operation time.

Under forecasts NR, this research will promote opening of new seller’s markets at the expense of expansion of a scope of technologies of the company in such spheres as intellectual buildings, Grid-systems and polygraphy.

Replacement of copper with light for increase of productivity of energy

The second direction of researches is possibility of replacement of electric connections on a copper basis (the copper electric posting used in modern IT Systems), optical laser communication lines.

At the heart of the project of Photon switching (Photonic Interconnect), the management which carries out Stanley Williams (R. Stanley Williams), the senior scientific employee and the director of Laboratory of information and quantum systems of division of Laboratories NR, lay years of researches in the field of creation of fotonno-optical communications and components.

Researchers NR Labs will carry out researches of the consumer press and the polygraphic industry for the purpose of comparison of influence on environment of existing business models with what will involve new technologies of laboratories NR. Research will allow to measure and demonstrate possibilities of new technologies and scientific workings out in the field of increase in an overall performance, reduction of consumption of resources and energy, and also carbon emissions. It is planned, that «sustainability hub» becomes accessible to the public in 2009.
