Half of American retail trade systems supposes leaks of personal data

According to company Gartner, almost half of American retail trade systems supposes leaks of personal data. In overwhelming majority of cases the information on breaking remains closed and inaccessible to the clients who have suffered from leak. Experts of company Perimetrix assume, that riteyleryi ignore leaks to avoid the further material losses connected with aggravation of reputation and outflow of loyal clients.

Within the limits of research experts Gartner have interrogated representatives of 50 American retail trade systems and ave found out, that at least 21 network has admitted information leakage. However to declare leak three networks were publicly decided only. Thus, more than 85 % of leaks in retail sector do not fall outside the limits the organisations which have admitted them.

«We cannot do exact conclusions of this research as few respondents participated in it, - has noted analyst Gartner Avayva Laytan (Avivah Litan). – However the received results visually show the important trend – personal data often vanish, and in most cases about it nobody learns. Data on a small part of leaks occurring in the world get to the press».

Let’s remind, that in the end of 2006 retail trade system TJX has admitted the most scale leak for all history of mankind, having lost the information on 94 million bank cards of clients. Leak in network Hannaford had smaller scales (4,2 million cards), however and it has led the company to huge financial losses. By estimations of the analytical centre of company Perimetrix, the general damage from the second leak will make $400 million, and losses TJX and are at all estimated in billions.

4 from 50 interrogated riteylerov have been fined by payment systems for discrepancy to standard PCI DSS, and 11 more companies have received preventions for a similar fault, marks site CNews. We will remind, that the standard regulates storage and processing of data on payment cards which "flow away" from the retail companies more often. According to Gartner, leaks from the retail companies are the reason of 20 % of crimes with bank cards.

«Specificity of the retail companies consists in a large quantity of clients. As consequence, they should process huge files of personal data which are often lost, - Denis Zenkin, the director for company Perimetrix marketing has noted. – the safety System riteylera should be constructed at the highest level as any leak from such company leads to the heaviest consequences».

Let’s notice, that in the majority of American states laws which oblige are passed to notify all citizens injured with leak. Thus, the huge weight riteylerov simply infringes the law, ignoring requests about the notification. «Riteyleryi perfectly know, that has occurred to companies TJX and Hannaford and do not wish to repeat their way. They will not open the information until them will not press to a wall», - has told Avayva Laytan.
